Children's Work

Welcome to Muskaan

Muskaan began as a spontaneous effort in 1998 to provide educational inputs to 20 working children who were out of the school system and lived in the Ganga Nagar Basti of Bhopal. This interaction with children and other experiences of working with the basti people brought forth the realities of deprivation among the urban poor, particularly children and women. Today Muskaan is working in a 20 slum settlements, with the children, their families and communities on various issues concerning them, besides education, and in 24 government schools of Bhopal.

Illustration workshop with children
All children are artists! Their creative expression though takes varied forms. From writing stories, to drawing, painting, or just using material around and transforming it into images and scenes, they can do it all…if not alone, then together.

In a recent illustration workshop held with children of Muskaan’s learning center, children illustrated stories written by them, using different mediums like crayons, paints, leaves, paper bits and grains. Click here and take a quick look at what they’ve got.
