Welcome to Muskaan

Muskaan works with vulnerable slum communities in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on issues of education, identity, violence, survival needs of health and nutrition and tries to enhance livelihoods and savings through microcredit. Muskaan is a non-profit, non-governmental organization registered under the Societies Registration Act (1973).

Since its inception in 1998, Muskaan’s work has expanded from 6 to 24 slums in the city of Bhopal. Muskaan’s primary focus is on the education of children unable to access mainstream schools. Other programs differ across slums, depending on the critical needs of the community and the capacities and resources within the organization to address them. Strong inter-personal relationships with the community enrich and inform the different programs undertaken by the organization, often defining the focus and methods of work, and at times outlining the changes required within the programs themselves.

Land Journey

Muskaan has been using rented premises to carry out its work of teaching children from slum communities. Facilities have had to be changed every two years as house owners and residents actively discourage and discriminate against such children in their premises. In this process, students lose vital learning time due to the changing class timings and locations. Besides this, the rhythm and pace of studying and teaching is disrupted, and much effort goes into re-initiating students in the new space. To address this, Muskaan bought a piece of land just outside Bhopal with the help of donors and a large loan in December 2010.

Help us in this quest to build a permanent place where slum children are always welcome!
