Bal Mela

Bal melas are children's fairs, held annually in multiple school centers. Bal melas help to inspire students by highlighting the joy of learning through creative group projects such as plays, reading, writing, story-telling and science experiements. Bal melas often bring together students from the government school system and slum children to work together - an experience that would otherwise never happen.

Residential Camps

Redidential camps provide the chance for children from exceptionally difficult families to to study and maintain a structured daily schedule. Often for for the first time, children have the opportunity to brush their teeth, bathe, study, play and eat at scheduled times. The children who attend camp are generally responsible for all or part of the families daily earnings. The big responsabilities held by these students make adjustment to a normal school schedule nearly impossible. However, the intensive environment of camp brings the children beyond Hindi, English and mathmatical literacy to an interest in lifelong learning and positive happnes. Sometimes camp provides the motivation for students to join our alternative learning center after camp ends.

Girls Hostel

Sometimes it is just not possible for girls to study in the slum. The girl's hostel provides a home and support for studies for about 15 girls. The oldest generation of hostel girls are now completing bachelor's degrees in subjects as varied as engineering and visual arts. The hostel also provides a protective space for women threatened by domestic or community violence.

Workshops & Exposure Visits

Workshops and exposure visits expand students horizons, help to build confidence and encourage self-expression. Some activities focus on practical skills such as tin crafts or bicyle repair, while others focus on creative skills and expression such as animation, cartoons, writing stories and acting in dramas. Annual field trips help to motivate students from the youngest ages to keep learning and discovering the world outside their slum.
