Muskaan's experiences working in basti communities has lead to the development of a wealth of resources. Many publications are available for free of cost or for sale from our publications page. Thes publications were often developed with Muskaan students and are interesting for children and adults alike. Muskaan's staff have additionally produced many research papers on issues related to educational development and slum communities.

Working Papers

Help Teaching Fractions: Children have always found it difficult to do operations with fractions. How can a child without a flicker of an eyelid answer that between 20/ 31 and 25/35, the latter is a bigger number. The approach used in Muskaan has been detailed in the given paper.


Protesting Police Violence: The Pardhi community living in Rajiv Nagar, Bhopal is in continuous threat of police extortion for money under the threat of implications of theft. Scrap-picking or at home, children and women are picked up, violently beaten in the local thanas, verbally and sexually abused. The police administration justifies these actions becasuse Pardhi's belong to a denotified tribe. The community took a step towards non-acceptance of the continuous violation of their rights through a public meeting with senior police officials. Click here to access the meeting report.


Tintibai Suicide Case: Tintibai, a 16 year old girl of the Pardhi community, committed suicide, on January 16, 2008 after continuous state of helplessness with repeated incidents of humiliation and coping with abusive language and physical violation. She had been beaten up in the thana again that morning on the pretext of having stolen fuel from a vehicle. Click her for case details.
